Hello dear loyal.

This is an installation of many of my woodcuts from prints done over the last ten years here in San Francisco. It features among other things, Tatiana the Tiger, my sweetheart Damon, a leafy sea dragon from the Cal academy, our man Tony Vadakan with the city skyline, Scrabbel mastermind Dan Lee, Moggs, 1 year anniversary poster for Mods V Rockers at the Make-out Room, 4 of the yearly zodiac blocks...

It is viewable in the conference room of a new home design space for Aldea, at Valencia and 20th in the mission and will be open to the public starting October 19th. Go in and say hello to it. It is ten years in the making. It probably has a big crush on you...

Aldea Home is thrilled to present its first curated exhibition in conjunction with the launch of its new 7000 sq ft home store at 890 Valencia street. Ten artists were chosen and carefully situated within fully staged rooms in order to showcase ambitious art in ideal domestic spaces. Artworks range from Dana Hemenway's "Wall Covering" installation of artificial leaves functioning as uncanny wallpaper to Katie Shapiro's evocative photographs of California landscapes, to Site Rupe's paint and silkscreen "Dick and Jane" style icons. Many of the artists use serial processes to achieve unique results such as Leah Rosenberg's stripe and layer cake paintings, Owen Schuh's mathematically derived designs, or Mark Golamco's rubbings of an Islamic pattern to create a modern basket form. Along with editioned prints, Nathalie Roland shares an installation of original woodcuts from ten years of printmaking. Jessica Skloven's elegant photographs of Icelandic water flows contrasts excitingly with bold striped wallpaper. Liz Koerner's luminous walnut and sand cast glass piece and Courtney Price's cut collages and hardwood sculptures relate to their occupations as designers and resonate with the furniture and objects in the store. In this way the artworks interact poignantly with a context similar to how art lives in actual homes. We hope to inspire our patrons to collect unique art pieces alongside home furnishings and design accents.

Andrew suggested I do a woodcut of Sonny so I started with some sketches.

Then got to carving...

Myleen helped me hang prints to dry while I was printing. We celebrated the completion with Mirabelle.

This is a woodcut reduction print I did in 2008 depicting Tatiana the tiger. It was actually the original design for the bay bridged 10 inch record which you can find here. For one reason or another I thought they wouldn't like it so I sent the bear instead. I thought the tiger would have been rad since Tatiana is local but I went with the California bear instead. Anyway - you can learn more about Tatiana here

That's the wood on the press, I did a reduction with a light orange and blue as the final color. The final edition was real small - under 15 total with a fragile water based ink.

Just a ghostly little bird - She flew to an old nest 382 miles south in the city of angels. Following the trail of a dearly departed - In the old nest all alone she lay her head upon possessions which can not be taken through the gates of the spirit world. A cherished desk and chair, a statuette of a child with a bird on its finger... She filled the old nest with fresh flowers for her parents and followed el camino real back to the animals patron Saint Francisco for a loving reunion with her sweet hearts.

Along the King's road she encountered falcons, hummingbirds, ravens, sandpipers and gulls... saw seals playing in the waves... watched the fog rise over golden hills by the pacific... California's abundant beauty.

This sunset is for you grandmother.

Waiting for a letter/Mods Vs Rockers anniversary print

This is a woodcut print I made for the 1 year anniversary of Mods Vs Rockers - A monthly music party at the Make-Out Room. The next one is tomorrow night and will feature two bands: Ten Foot Five and Bond Girl. Doors at 7:30 - Bands promptly at 8:00 - Mods v Rockers DJs spin all night. You can find a mix of records I played last month Here (Catch my drift) The Print is titled "Waiting for a letter".

Here's a shot of the wood, which is inked and then pressed to the paper for the impression you see at the top. There is a dragon fly in there cause I was missing Anna when I carved it. The print also features my favorite portable record player purchased in Japan when I lived in Tokyo in 1998 round about. I carve all the wood with my teeth... no, not really. But I am an animal. I use tools to carve the wood. Here's a photo Myleen took of my favorite tools and I Ink knife, carving tools and Utility knife.

Here are some details of the wood I carved with tools, mainly a utility knife. Each piece of salvaged wood I use (This one is from Jason and Jane's garage) is unique with its own grain, knots and personality.

This is my portfolio print from UCSC Printmaking Senior Studio in 1997. It is a woodcut reduction called "Discography". It combines elements from previous prints made in the UCSC print studio. In addition to the woodcut reduction, the final layer of this print is simply an old 7 inch record inked and run through the press.

Art Practical and Open Space at the SFMOMA 3/24

We are very excited to announce our collaboration with the SFMOMA’s Open Space blog for a three-part conversation. The conversations begin Thursday March 24. The three part series entitled “Shop Talk” will focus on survival strategies artists develop and adopt to gain recognition and financial viability. We’ll use Stephanie Syjuco’s collaborative project Shadowshop, currently on view as part of The More Things Change, as a jumping-off point to examine the ways artists attempt to re-structure market conditions to accommodate, support, or help further the social reach of the aesthetic and critical capacities of their work. We’ll also look at the ways a general public engages and responds to these efforts.

The conversation begins in our current issue with features from Christian L. Frock (Notes on Alternative Autonomy) and Zachary Scholz (San Francisco and the Art World of Tomorrow, Part 1). Also look for a post by Renny Pritikin on Open Space.

The series continues on April 14, and will home in on the most prevailing concerns raised in the first discussion. We envision the third and final conversation of the series, on May 12, as a brainstorming session in which attendees will be encouraged to consider possible models for autonomy—or change—in tough economic times.

We hope to see you on Thursday!

Opening Reception: Thursday February 17th, 7-10pm @ ParkLife in San Francisco

Feb 17th - March 27th

The show will consist of a month-long gallery transformation that will include installations, workshops, music performance and overall happening.

Kyle Field and Thomas Campbell will be working in and evolving the gallery space, transforming the area into a workspace and an art installation. Gallery visitors will have the opportunity to see the space evolve over the month long duration where Field and Campbell will be working on a semi-regular basis while staging performances (poetry, music, performance, workshops, and more..) on Thursdays throughout the month with other events to be announced as well.

This is one week where we can accomplish some serious community organizing. The nub and thrust of the whole thing is to make it blatantly and unavoidably clear that the loss of KUSF is unpopular. The board will resume on Tuesday, February 8th to vote. In the meantime, take every step you can to voice your opinion to the Board of Supervisors, like:

1. Call and Keep Calling- If you don't know your district, check this district map. Then check here for the contact information of your Supervisor here. If you call during normal business hours, your call will be answered by your Supervisor, or an aid. Calling after they close is also effective, jamming up the voicemail can do wonders. Tell them, firmly, that you urge them to stand with Sup. Mirkarimi to block the sale of 90.3, and restore broadcast programming of KUSF.

If you are not registered to vote, call anyway. If you are registered in one district, but live in another, call both supervisors. If your Supervisor is Ross Mirkarimi, call Mark Farrel of D2. It's adjacent, and he's one of the more conservative leaning Supe's.

If you are not a San Francisco resident, but live within the broadcast radius of KUSF, you can still call- call all of them.

2. Email, Email All of Them- emails can also be found on the Board of Supervisors website. A succinct sample would be:
"Dear Supervisor ________, I urge you to vote in favor of Mirkarimi's proposition on Tuesday, February 8th. KUSF is a valuable community asset, and I wholly oppose it's sale. -Best Regards, more

Ear of the Rabbit

Fellow rabbit/slug/artist/long time friend Jeff Dikio reminded me that the lunar year of the rabbit is just around the corner (February 7th). I began carving a block provided by Dan 'Tiger' Lee

I proofed it on various papers I had laying around the shop. SInce Damon and I are both rabbits I decided to try a print with two animals for a change...Here's the ones I have done so far Zodiac set

BURIAL TREE "Outer Dark" (self released) cd-r 12.98

We've said it before, we love when our friends make amazing music. The sort of music that transcends the bonds of friendship, that requires none of the obligation that usually accompanies 'friend rock', the sort of music that had you just discovered it, unaware of its provenance, you wouldn't think twice about proclaiming its virtues, blasting it on your iPod nonstop, or if you're us, raving about it on the New Arrivals list.

Burial Tree is the realization of several years of intense work, and is the project of aQ pal Monte and his wife Lauren, along with a few other contributors, and is a mysterious, drone rock epic, a blissed out and darkly brooding record of haunting heaviness and abstract moodiness. A collection of subtly crafted cinematic soundscapes, equal parts Barn Owl psychedelic drift, Neurosis riff heavy crush, Three Mile Pilot post rock lope, and various stops in between.

The record begins with a haunting solo cello rendition of Hank Williams' "Ramblin' Man', transformed into an achingly mournful lament, the perfect lead in to "Secret Arts", a sprawling stretch of minimal black ambience, a lush, layered expanse of layered low end, and softly pulsing synth swells, laced with bits of melody, and warn swirls of sonic sunlight, a slow shifting scene setter for the sounds to come. "The Mysterious Stranger" is a dark twang flecked bit of Earth-y post rock, the guitars spidery and minor key, the drums busy and intricate, the strings soaring and swirling, all over a bed of subtle synth shimmer, eventually big riffs swoop in, and things get a bit metallic, with some killer stop/start dynamics, rife with synth squiggles and spaced out FX. A driving, hypnotic, subtly proggy, spaced out dirge rock, that shifts from dense distorted crunch to minimal lope and back again. And it's during those loping minimal bits that the sound reminds us of vintage Three Mile Pilot, the thick bass suspended over deep swirling space, paranoid and hauntingly ominous.

"The Bringer Of Light" mirrors the melodies from the song before it, making it feel like a sort of second movement, it's reverby contemplative drift sounding like some nineties slowcore combo via desert rockers Scenic, very evocative, barren landscapes, wide open skies, shadows moving slowly across the ground, here too, the strings do the heavy melodic lifting, while the drums and guitar weave a skeletal framework, sounding like something that wouldn't have been out of place on Thrill Jockey back in the day. The track builds to a swirling psychedelic climax, all pounding drums and swirling synths, before fading into another bit of smoldering dronemusic, a spacey effects heavy stretch of whirring Moogs and looped FX, blurred into gauzy bits of fragmented melody, and thick, softly undulating layers of washed out blackness.

"Conjuring Demons" is another post rocker that takes the spare bass heavy, spidery melodies of 3MP and weds them to some more arid spacious desert rock, another haunting excursion into abstract instrumental meander, the stings here adding color and texture, the main guitar riff memorable enough to stay lodged in your head, the drums eventually dropping off, leaving just the strings over a barely there bit of deep rumbling shimmer. The record finally winds down with the gorgeous title track, the cello played so lyrically, the melodies melancholy and mournful, wrapped around muted chiming melodies, and a strange distant insectoid buzz, a dark, emotional threnody, the sound of the sun disappearing beneath the horizon, the moon vanishing behind the clouds, the fire dying to embers in the hearth, the stars fading into the blackness of space. So nice.

Dear Ross Mirkarimi,

I am writing to urge you to please help save KUSF.

KUSF is a key element in San Francisco's music community. Turning the terrestrial broadcast off will effect the vitality of San Francisco's music culture at large. KUSF is directly responsible for bringing the San Francisco music scene to a world class status. Giving our local bands the exposure they need to start on their journeys to being booked for international music festivals and invited to culturally significant events all over the globe.

Personally KUSF is a friend I listen to weekday mornings to help start my day. It is a local voice and multifaceted musical personality that I rely on to enrich my life as a San Francisco resident.

KUSF is a bridge for traveling international artists to connect with our city as well.

KUSF effects the reach and accessibility of our music venues, the vitality of the venues, resident artists, venue staff and on to the quality of life of the general population.

It is a necessary institution for San Francisco's cultural vitality. It is a heart breaking shame that a station built over 3 decades of dedication from their volunteers and the love and reliance of it's contributors and listeners have been treated so carelessly and disrespectfully.

The sellers of the station have alienated a large, culturally significant part of San Francisco's community and character.

I am counting on you as my elected representative, to do everything in your power to resolve this situation for our community.

In a 2009 interview with British magazine The Wire centered on the band's final album, Witch Cults Of The Radio Age, Keenan talked about the echoes of previous eras in Broadcast's music:

I think the evocation of memory in our music could be seen as the residue of imaginary time travel. You can either go forward or back. You go back in order to change something in the now, to redesign the course of events for personal reasons. When you go back to a previous musical time you're trying to recall a memory that never happened to you, that is not stored, so it would make sense that you hear a fuzzy dissolving sense of time and place as you call it. When you make music in backwards time travel it's shadowy or faint impression as though you're looking back through two clouded lenses, one is the time travel portal the other is a false recollection process.

In a way, when I go back to my own memories I feel as if that's not me either, when I think about myself as 13 or 20 I feel a disconnection from that person. It's the same with dreams. When you recall the events it never really happened to the waking you, but to the dreaming you. Memories are waking dreams and dreams are sleeping memories, when you make music inspired by this process you begin to break down conventional form in the same way that dreams and memories never start at the beginning or finish at the end. It seems to me that the past is always happening now, all previous events have positioned us here philosophically, geographically, and in the present we are always in memory... unless you're a Zen monk of course.

Super basic - Enchilada sauce, meat, tortillas and cheese.
Embellished -
-Simmer onions and chopped green chile (additional chopped garlic and celery optional) in a pan til they subside, add meat (shredded left over turkey, ground chicken chorizo, soy product) until cooked, add enchilada sauce (1/3 can/jar - enough to sauce it up but not too much don't make soup)
-In pan make a bed of enchilada sauce (about 1/4 inch tall) - Add meat to a (Fried in veggie oil optional) tortilla (+plus soft cheese optional) wrap and repeat til you have filled the pan. Pour remaining enchilada sauce over the top and sprinkle grated cheese.
Cook in oven 400 for about 25 minutes (sauce should be bubbling, cheese melted and tortilla edges slightly crispy) - Top with fresh chopped green onions.
Sorry I don't have measurements, I just watch my mom and then copy her. When I watched her she used left over turkey, onions, soft goat cheese, Las Palmas enchilada sauce, grated cheddar, green chile and fried her tortillas. I used Chicken chorizo, onion, celery, garlic, soft goat cheese, grated goat cheese and unfried flour tortillas, green chile and local enchilada sauce forgot the name) Then next time I make them, I am going to try shredded meat (it's a great way to revive left meat), gonna skip the soft cheese on the inside, go heavier on the shredded goat cheese on the top or try soy station cheddar.
